This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce creative photo images using photo lighting techniques.The unit applies to those who select and control lighting and light quality when producing photo images taken in the studio and on location. At this level, work is usually carried out independently, with supervision or guidance available where required.No licensing, legislative or certification conditions apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Research lighting techniques
  • 1.1 Identify and review range of historical and contemporary sources of lighting techniques
  • 1.2 Examine theories of light and their application in photo imaging
  • 1.3 Prepare shoot list for range of lighting experiments and confirm lighting techniques and schema with required personnel
2. Experiment with light for complex subjects
  • 2.1 Arrange shoot requirements for identified lighting experiments
  • 2.2 Explore lighting subjects in range of different locations
  • 2.3 Apply lighting techniques and technology safely in experimental process
  • 2.4 Adapt lighting techniques to photo imaging work when reviewing processes
  • 2.5 Document results of experiments for incorporation into future works
3. Apply lighting techniques
  • 3.1 Produce series of photo images using appropriate lighting techniques and technology
  • 3.2 Evaluate effectiveness of lighting techniques and technology and note areas for improvement
  • 3.3 Catalogue research reference material and work samples
  • 3.4 Identify future opportunities, work directions, equipment needs and workflow changes resulting from photo lighting experiments
