Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse music in formulating conclusions about the aesthetic, technical and expressive characteristics of music.It applies to individuals who have high level skills in aural discrimination, music appreciation and artistic judgement. Performing musicians, music writers, music performance curators, and festival and concert programmers may apply these skills and knowledge to their professional practice. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify analysis requirements
- 1.1 Discuss with appropriate people the purpose and scope of the music analysis brief
- 1.2 Determine appropriate methodologies for analysing music in the context of the required task
- 1.3 Confirm the musical styles, genres and historical/cultural contexts of the selected music to be analysed
- 1.4 Clarify timelines for completion of analysis and factors that may impact on the analysis
2. Analyse elements of music for aesthetic and expressive qualities
- 2.1 Assess the selected music to determine the overall style and character of the music
- 2.2 Listen critically to and deconstruct musical elements to analyse how expressive, aesthetic and technical qualities are achieved
- 2.3 Confirm that the range of functional musical elements is appropriate to meet the standard required for analysis
- 2.4 Evaluate how production or technical requirements of realisation of the selected music impact upon the aesthetic and expressive qualities
- 2.5 Engage in discourse about aesthetic and artistic qualities of the selected music to inform own ideas
3. Convey the musical analysis
- 3.1 Incorporate in the analysis theory of music and related music vocabulary
- 3.2 Synthesise evidence and conclusions of the musical analysis in required format and within agreed timelines
- 3.3 Discuss analysis with appropriate people, and adjust as required
- 3.4 Seek feedback from appropriate people, evaluate own music analysis and processes, and note areas for future improvement
