Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, align and assemble a bra or swimwear garment from specifications or patterns. Work involves the use of sewing techniques where the positioning, feeding and handling of work pieces involves discretionary changes, contouring or critical stopping points and/or special handling skills required to accommodate fabric variations. It also involves the use of other assembly techniques and equipment used in bra and swimwear production such as gluing and fusing. The unit includes the ability to be able to work quickly and accurately with expensive and delicate fabrics, to tight tolerances.This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with established procedures using discretion, judgement and problem solving to complete work. It often applies to the sample machining role.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to assemble bras or swimwear
  • 1.1 Identify machining and productivity requirements from production specifications
  • 1.2 Develop plan for garment assembly that reflects the most logical and efficient sequencing of work operations
  • 1.3 Confirm work pieces against specifications and lay out in sequence according to assembly plan
  • 1.4 Set up machinery to suit fabric type and other job requirements
2. Assemble bras or swimwear
  • 2.1 Sew and assemble work pieces according to assembly plan and achieve outcomes within required timeframes
  • 2.2 Control machine speed and work handling according to type of operation, fabric and product type
  • 2.3 Inspect quality of both individual pieces and progressively assembled garment against quality standards and take appropriate action to rectify any deficiencies
  • 2.4 Monitor performance of machine for signs of faulty operation, and use evidence from inspection of finished pieces
3. Complete work
  • 3.1 Inspect and confirm that completed garment meets quality standards
  • 3.2 Record results of inspection and action taken to either reject or correct faulty work
  • 3.3 Record preventative action taken to avoid any recurrence of defective items
  • 3.4 Process work for next operation according to work requirements
  • 3.5 Complete required production records in accordance with workplace procedures
