This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct tack coat spraying operations in Civil Construction.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to conduct tack coat spraying operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply tack coat spraying operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Confirm and apply environmental protection and safety requirements
  • 1.6 Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.7 Select and check for faults tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Prepare for spraying operations
  • 2.1 Carry out pre-operational plant and equipment checks
  • 2.2 Check tank for cleanliness and contaminants prior to filling, and ensure transfer connections are completed and fully functional
  • 2.3 Conduct loading and unloading operations
  • 2.4 Ensure spray tank is filled with adequate materials to perform spray operations
  • 2.5 Identify application rate and translate into the relevant travel speed and pump characteristics where necessary
  • 2.6 Select jets and fit to spray bar
3. Spray tack coat
  • 3.1 Select and modify tack coating spraying techniques to meet changing conditions and surface types
  • 3.2 Conduct, control and monitor spraying operations of tack coat sprayer and ensure that materials are sprayed to specification
  • 3.3 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
  • 3.4 Complete work plan within the operating capacities of the allocated equipment
4. Operate hand lance
  • 4.1 Determine situations where hand spraying is required
  • 4.2 Set spray jets for job
  • 4.3 Conduct, control and monitor hand spraying operations and ensure that materials are sprayed to specification
  • 4.4 Clean and store hand spraying equipment after use
5. Carry out operator maintenance and housekeeping
  • 5.1 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 5.2 Clean spray bars and lances and ensure jets are free of contaminants
  • 5.3 Empty and clean tank of bituminous products
  • 5.4 Carry out routine operational servicing and lubrication tasks
  • 5.5 Carry out minor maintenance
  • 5.6 Maintain records including identification of potential and current equipment problems
  • 5.7 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 5.8 Carry out housekeeping requirements
