Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to proactively experiment and innovate with various calligraphy techniques and design concepts. It involves developing an individual style and professional practice of calligraphy.It applies to individuals with well developed skills in design and who produce work at a preprofessional level for sale in outlets such as markets and fairs. They work independently with limited supervision and guidance as required.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop proficiency with new calligraphy techniques
  • 1.1 Evaluate and list new approaches to calligraphic work based on known capabilities of techniques already used
  • 1.2 Adapt existing equipment or introduce new equipment, tools and materials to achieve different effects
  • 1.3 Extend own capability with calligraphy techniques through experimentation on samples, practice pieces or a work in progress
2. Develop ideas for own work
  • 2.1 Discuss creative and other goals for own calligraphic work with required personnel
  • 2.2 Research, adapt and use relevant ideas and approaches from other practitioners
  • 2.3 Confirm ideas meet intellectual property requirements with required personnel
  • 2.4 Refine and confirm ideas based on research, experimentation and collaboration with others
3. Organise calligraphy resources
  • 3.1 Identify presentation and resource requirements for chosen work
  • 3.2 Research potential sources of supply for calligraphic resources
  • 3.3 Coordinate required resources and set up workspace according to safety requirements
4. Realise and evaluate own work
  • 4.1 Create calligraphic work using techniques and media selected from research and experimentation, considering and applying elements and principles of design
  • 4.2 Review and refine ideas and approaches and make adjustments as required to produce final work
  • 4.3 Document development of own work and the research and ideas that informed it
  • 4.4 Seek feedback from relevant personnel on proficiency of work and areas for skill development
  • 4.5 Reflect on conceptual development and technical execution of own work
