Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop a broad understanding of the cultures of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural artists. It involves developing and applying specific knowledge required for own work in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts industry.The unit applies to individuals whose role in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts industry requires in-depth understanding of complex and interrelated elements of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures, both where they are working locally, and nationally. At this level, a person engages in a largely independent investigation process that informs their professional practice.Individuals could be working in urban, regional, rural or remote settings. The work environment could involve interactions with artists and their communities in contexts such as cultural centres, arts centres, cooperatives, commercial galleries, public galleries, museums, retail outlets, community projects, exhibitions, events and festivals.This unit reflects the diversity of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures and their cultural arts practices. It emphasises the importance of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples controlling their own cultural heritage and identity.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

- 1.3 Relate research findings to professional practice issues

2. Investigate cultures required for own work
- 2.1 Evaluate ideas and theory about impact of culture on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural artists
- 2.2 Research cultural arts practices of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural artists, including relevance to culture
- 2.3 Extend knowledge of cultural protocols required for own work
- 2.4 Analyse and record information gathered in required format
3. Apply research findings to professional practice
- 3.1 Access and reference information using required cultural protocols
- 3.2 Record provenance and authenticity of artwork
- 3.3 Confirm work practices recognise role of artist as family and community member and professional artist
- 3.4 Integrate new knowledge into professional practice to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural artists
