Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install polyvinylchloride (PVC) plastic pressure pipeline components in the field, in the form of UPVC (unplasticised PVC), MPVC (microcellular PVC) or OPVC (oriented PVC).This unit applies to an experienced technician working alone or as part of a team.The unit principally refers to the assessment of suitability of materials for specific gas or water pressure applications, preparation for and performance of chemical and mechanical jointing, repairs and service connections, and solving installation problems.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

1. Identify applications for alternative jointing technologies
  • 1.1 Assess suitability of mechanical jointing systems from known properties and limitations
  • 1.2 Assess suitability of chemical bonding jointing systems from known properties and limitations
  • 1.3 Perform trial jointing for all methods, and identify, rectify and report on non-conformance
  • 1.4 Assess quality against job specifications
2. Determine methods for handling, storage, transport and installation of PVC pipeline components
  • 2.1 Identify requirements for handling and transport of PVC materials from job specifications and according to relevant standards
  • 2.2 Determine requirements for long-term storage from job specifications and according to relevant standards
  • 2.3 Determine requirements for pipe installation, including additional materials from job specifications and according to relevant standards
3. Perform service connection and repair of plastic pipelines
  • 3.1 Determine service connection requirements from job requirements and according to relevant standards
  • 3.2 Perform service connection to meet job requirements
  • 3.3 Determine repair requirements from job requirements and according to relevant standards
  • 3.4 Identify alternative repair options that meet job requirements
  • 3.5 Repair installation to meet job requirements
4. Assess quality of completed installation
  • 4.1 Identify quality standards and test procedures for installation according to job specifications
  • 4.2 Follow test procedures to visually assess quality of completed installation against job specifications and report results
  • 4.3 Accurately maintain records and logbooks
