Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct aggregate spreader box operations in civil construction.It applies to those working in operational roles. The individual is generally a skilled operator and may provide theoretical advice and support a team.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to conduct aggregate spreader box operations
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply aggregate spreader box operations documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
- 1.5 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
- 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks and check for faults within scope of own role
- 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Set up to conduct aggregate spreader box operations
- 2.1 Place cut on/cut off paper in preparation for bitumen spraying and at the end of the spray run
- 2.2 Connect equipment to the truck prior to operation
- 2.3 Set spreader box to required width according to job requirements
- 2.4 Check spreader box is ready for operation
- 2.5 Check spreader box calibration
- 2.6 Establish communication with the truck driver according to job requirements and workplace procedures
- 2.7 Check and record size of aggregate prior to spreading
3. Spread aggregate
- 3.1 Remove cut on/cut off paper in preparation for aggregate spreading
- 3.2 Complete spreading and coordinate opening and closing of the spreader box with speed and application of aggregate
- 3.3 Instruct driver to adjust speed, line or angle of body as required
- 3.4 Monitor spread rate and make adjustments as required
4. Perform hand spreading and spotting duties
- 4.1 Check and correct uniformity of run as required
- 4.2 Use hand spreading method as required
5. Disconnect and clean up
- 5.1 Disconnect spreader box after operation
- 5.2 Check truck is free of spreader and the spreader has all connecting parts positioned for transportation or further use
- 5.3 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials as required according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
- 5.4 Clean, check, perform maintenance on in scope of own role, and store plant, tools and equipment
- 5.5 Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements
