Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to control activities on the training area and range (TAR), including access and activities, where coordination and compliance are required. It also covers the review and maintenance of TAR Standing Orders and raising and disseminating relevant reports.This unit was developed for Defence personnel who work in range management and range control but may be relevant to others who work in this field.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Those undertaking this unit would work independently or as part of a team, under indirect supervision, while performing complex tasks, in a range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts. They would use discretion and judgement and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for controlling TAR activities
  • 1.1 Identify and obtain relevant instructions in accordance with TAR Standing Orders
  • 1.2 Clarify and agree purpose and outcomes of user activities in accordance with TAR Standing Orders
  • 1.3 Establish clearances and access to activities in accordance with TAR Standing Orders
2 Confirm range instructions conform to Standing Orders
  • 2.1 Confirm the suitability of weapons and ammunition to be fired on the requested range
  • 2.2 Identify non-compliant training activities and indicate non-compliance to relevant commanders
  • 2.3 Conduct gross error checks on traces and templates
  • 2.4 Confirm contingency plans and safety requirements
  • 2.5 Forward compliant TAR instructions to approving authorities
3 Control TAR activities
  • 3.1 Resolve coordination issues through direct contact and discussions with users
  • 3.2 Control access and exit to TAR
  • 3.3 Control movement within the TAR
  • 3.4 Grant approval for commencement of practices
4 Review and maintain TAR Standing Orders
  • 4.1 Review TAR Standing Orders
  • 4.2 Identify changes that are required
  • 4.3 Maintain TAR Standing Orders
5 Report on TAR activities
  • 5.1 Raise reports in accordance with TAR Standing Orders and relevant instructions
  • 5.2 Disseminate reports to relevant authorities in accordance with TAR Standing Orders and relevant contracts
