Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and prime scenic art cloths for screen and entertainment industry productions. It involves planning scenic art cloth preparation according to production requirements, laying out the cloths, preparing them for application of artwork and storing cloths.The unit applies to those who work under supervision to prepare scenic art components ready for painting and other artwork. They are mainly responsible for stretching, priming and rendering cloths used for set elements, such as backdrops or flats.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan scenic art cloth preparation
  • 1.1 Confirm production requirements and timelines with required production personnel
  • 1.2 Interpret documentation and determine required quantities and measurements for scenic art cloths
  • 1.3 Select tools, equipment and materials required for scenic art cloth preparation
2. Lay out scenic art cloths
  • 2.1 Measure, cut, stretch and lay out scenic art cloths according to instructions and specifications
  • 2.2 Check laid out cloths meet production and design specifications for their specific scenic art element
  • 2.3 Seek feedback on work in progress with production personnel and make adjustments as required
  • 2.4 Follow safety and organisational procedures when laying out scenic art cloths
3. Prime and store cloths
  • 3.1 Apply applicable materials to scenic art cloths in preparation for artwork, taking care to follow instructions for the use of hazardous materials
  • 3.2 Label and code each scenic art cloth for identification during the production phase
  • 3.3 Store scenic art cloths and other elements according to organisational policies and procedures
