Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to build a foundation in contemporary dance forms under the supervision of experienced dancers and dance teachers.The unit applies to those who have some dance experience, which would have been usually gained in community dance activities, often from an early age. However, this unit also applies to individuals with no prior training, but who have an aptitude for dance and an interest in developing technique in one or more cultural dance styles.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Discuss contemporary dance as an art form
  • 1.1 Discuss aspects of contemporary dance culture and history with required personnel
  • 1.2 Use contemporary dance terminology when required in discussions with others
2. Practise simple contemporary dance movements
  • 2.1 Perform warm-up exercises under the guidance of supervisor according to safe dance practices
  • 2.2 Practise basic steps associated with selected style of contemporary dancing
  • 2.3 Incorporate musicality, timing and rhythm into exercises
  • 2.4 Identify and work within own physical limits according to safe dance practices
  • 2.5 Respond to constructive feedback and advice from required personnel during practice sessions
  • 2.6 Complete cool-down exercises according to safe dance practices
3. Perform short contemporary dance sequences
  • 3.1 Agree on sequences that include a range of movements in consultation with required personnel, according to own technical ability
  • 3.2 Match personal presentation to selected style of contemporary dance
  • 3.3 Communicate mood and style of dance according to requirements of the dance sequence
  • 3.4 Demonstrate awareness timing and rhythm in performance
4. Review performances and set goals
  • 4.1 Evaluate own performance and development of foundation contemporary dance techniques
  • 4.2 Seek and use coaching from others to identify areas where own contemporary dance technique can be improved
  • 4.3 Set goals for improvement and develop a plan to achieve them
