This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to locate and catch crabs, prawns and squid, and clean and prepare them following capture.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Locate crabs, prawns and squid.
  • 1.1. Identify and select suitable tackle and apparatus for catching crabs, prawns and squid.
  • 1.2. Source locations for catching each species, in shore and off shore according to relevant legislation.
2. Catch crabs, prawns and squid.
  • 2.1. Identify differences between crab pots and set suitable types of crab pots according to the situation, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 2.2. Handle and tie crabs appropriately and identify the differences between males and females.
  • 2.3. Measure crabs and return female and undersized crabs according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 2.4. Throw a cast net to catch prawns according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 2.5. Identify differences between squid lures and use appropriately according to the situation, relevant legislation, and organisational policies and procedures.
3. Maintain, clean and prepare catch.
  • 3.1. Determine possible uses of the catch and apply the most appropriate processing procedures.
  • 3.2. Apply methods of maintaining, cleaning and preparing catch for its end use.
