Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manufacture and assemble custom and flat-pack furniture (such as bed bases, bunks, fridge units, cupboard carcasses [for overhead, kitchen, wardrobe, rear and other cupboards], partitions and seat bases in recreational vehicles). The unit includes manufacturing and assembling furniture components and subassemblies to make carcasses and similar items before being installed in a recreational vehicle. For the completion of the internal fit-out including installation of appliances and fit-out items and preparation for quality inspection, see MSMRV378 Complete recreational vehicle internal fit-outs.The unit applies to a person working in a recreational vehicle manufacturing facility who undertakes routine tasks according to job instructions, plans/specifications and procedures and uses discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services and contingency measures. They work with a high degree of self-direction and limited supervision. They apply known solutions to routine problems and report non-routine problems according to procedures. They are responsible for their output and have limited responsibility for the output of others.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to build furniture
- 1.1 Identify furniture building requirements from job instructions
- 1.2 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use
- 1.3 Gather furniture components and other items required by job specifications, and check they meet quality requirements
- 1.4 Identify hazards and hazard controls and check the hazard controls are in place and operating
2. Manufacture furniture components
- 2.1 Develop the cutting list for the furniture components to minimise waste material and maximise energy efficiency
- 2.2 Adjust the cutting machine and conduct a cutting trial to meet quality requirements
- 2.3 Position and feed materials into the cutting machine according to workplace procedures
- 2.4 Confirm components against set-outs for required tolerances, fit and accuracy
- 2.5 Recycle or discard non-compliant components according to workplace procedures
3. Assemble furniture
- 3.1 Identify the procedure and sequence for assembling furniture components and subassemblies
- 3.2 Lay out and fasten together the furniture components and subassemblies according to assembly instructions
- 3.3 Prepare furniture components for assembly
- 3.4 Complete assembling the furniture and rectify any blemishes using cleaning agents and finishing tools
- 3.5 Check finished the assembly accords with job instructions and comply with quality requirements and rectify any deficiencies
4. Complete the build according to workplace procedures
- 4.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 4.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 4.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
- 4.4 Complete task outcome documentation
