This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to participate in quality improvement programs at a basic level. It includes interpreting and applying quality standards and procedures, monitoring and reporting on quality and assisting in implementing approved improvement strategy or strategies.The unit applies to engineering or related activities and is suitable for people giving technical support in manufacturing or engineering operations and those pursuing technical qualifications and careers at paraprofessional or technician level. All work is carried out under supervision.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Interpret and apply quality standards and procedures
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.2 Interpret quality standards and procedures and apply to individual work and team activities
2. Monitor and report on quality
  • 2.1 Monitor quality of all received, in-work and finished materials and products in accordance with SOPs
  • 2.2 Use designated process improvement tools either individually or in a team to identify and solve quality problems
  • 2.3 Use designated analytical tools to evaluate principal causes of process variation in consultation with the team or other subject experts
  • 2.4 Recommend further action to improve quality where required
3. Assist in implementing approved improvement strategy or strategies
  • 3.1 Establish key indicators and performance measures and agree in consultation with the team or other subject experts
  • 3.2 Measure process and product output against key indicators in consultation with the team or other subject experts
  • 3.3 Take steps to lock in improvements according to scope of own job role
