Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to gather and harvest native plants for processing as Australian bush food. Native plants may include fruit, nuts, leaves and/or seed.The unit applies to individuals who work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people to gather, forage, harvest and prepare local native plants for processing and commercial sale.Legislation, regulations, and by-laws relating to the collection and removal of plant materials from public and private land apply. Users are advised to check with the local, relevant authority.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify local native plants to be harvested
- 1.1 Investigate main types and traditional uses of native plants
- 1.2 Identify scientific and local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander plant name
- 1.3 Consult with local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people to ensure cultural protocols are followed
2. Harvest required plants
- 2.1 Confirm season and location have been considered and plants are suitable for harvest
- 2.2 Prepare harvesting equipment according to supervisor instruction
- 2.3 Follow workplace processes for safely harvesting plants
- 2.4 Collect identified plants using appropriate method
- 2.5 Remove any foreign material and clean plants in preparation for storage
- 2.6 Dispose of waste according to supervisor instruction
3. Prepare and store harvested plants
- 3.1 Confirm plants have been inspected for disease or pests with supervisor
- 3.2 Ensure plants are labelled according to supervisor's instruction
- 3.3 Package plants following relevant food safety standards
