This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to extend music composition skills in any music genre and refine skills through the setting of professional development goals.The unit applies to those who apply commitment and high-level skills in aural imagination, melodic development, instrumentation and orchestration to extend the range of compositional briefs to which they can competently respond. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Establish goals and prepare to compose music
  • 1.1 Evaluate and discuss factors that contribute to excellence in music composition
  • 1.2 Listen to and evaluate recordings of master composers and identify techniques that could be applied to own practice
  • 1.3 Cultivate relationships that enhance own professional practice using networking strategies
  • 1.4 Identify and document professional development goals for refining composition techniques based on critical analysis of previous work
  • 1.5 Establish criteria for monitoring and evaluating own skill development according to professional development goals
  • 1.6 Devise and implement a practice plan that incorporates development goals
2. Compose music using advanced techniques
  • 2.1 Establish requirements of compositional brief with required personnel
  • 2.2 Generate musical ideas and starting points in response to brief, and test options for realising them
  • 2.3 Organise musical elements into working versions of musical piece using different compositional techniques
  • 2.4 Apply required copyright notice to the composition according to requirements
3. Finalise composition
  • 3.1 Share work in progress with required personnel and refine ideas using creative and technical feedback
  • 3.2 Review composition during rehearsal or in final mix form and adjust as required according to brief requirements
  • 3.3 Present composition in required format and within agreed timeframe according to brief requirements
4. Review own skill development
  • 4.1 Compare work against previous compositions to assess development of own techniques and skills
  • 4.2 Evaluate level of improvement in own compositional techniques against agreed criteria
  • 4.3 Discuss composition with required personnel and use feedback to develop improvement strategies for future compositions
