Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to apply permaculture principles for establishing organic garden and orchard systems from permaculture plans, including selecting plants for site conditions and requirements to achieve optimum production.The unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work, including limited responsibility for the work of others. They use discretion and judgement in the selection and use of available resources, and complete routine activities. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Assess site for organic garden and orchard system
- 1.1 Access and interpret permaculture system plans and specifications for site and client needs
- 1.2 Inspect site for environmental and physical attributes
- 1.3 Inspect site and locate existing structures and services
- 1.4 Identify location of gardens and orchard
- 1.5 Identify site constraints and opportunities
- 1.6 Verify site inspections with plans and specifications and identify inconsistencies
- 1.7 Rectify inconsistencies with key stakeholders and update plans and specifications
- 1.8 Prepare zone and sector plan of garden and orchard according to verified permaculture system plan
2. Select plants for organic garden and orchard system
- 2.1 Test soil and analyse results for garden and orchard locations
- 2.2 Select plant varieties and types according to soil type, permaculture plan and client production needs
- 2.3 Determine number and size of plant material according to planned garden and orchard outcomes
- 2.4 Identify and source planting material according to permaculture system plan
3. Develop planting plan for organic garden and orchard system
- 3.1 Identify zone and sector details from permaculture plan
- 3.2 Identify and locate plants to be installed on a planting plan
- 3.3 Document a schedule of planting actions, timelines and specifications according to workplace procedures
4. Prepare site and plant organic garden and orchard system
- 4.1 Prepare planting materials according to plant type and schedule
- 4.2 Prepare gardens and orchard site for planting
- 4.3 Locate and plant species according to planting plan
- 4.4 Provide planting with nutrition and soil moisture according to permaculture system design and organic plant standards
- 4.5 Record and report garden and orchard planting system activity according to workplace procedures
