Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to rectify and touch up paint faults on vehicle body components. This unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, identifying and rectifying faults using clear over base (COB) two-pack paint materials according to manufacturer specifications, and completing workplace processes and documentation.The unit applies to those working in the automotive refinishing industry.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
  • 1.1 Identify job requirements from workplace instructions
  • 1.2 Identify hazards associated with the work, assess potential risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies and procedures
  • 1.3 Identify tools, equipment and chemicals required for repair activity and establish serviceability according to workplace procedures
2. Identify paint fault, its cause and rectification requirements
  • 2.1 Identify cause of paint fault from paint manufacturer information and confirm with appropriate personnel
  • 2.2 Inspect visually inspect faulty paintwork according to workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Assess damage to paintwork through visual comparison with undamaged paintwork
  • 2.4 Identify fault rectification requirements according to manufacturer and workplace procedures
3. Rectify and touch-up paint faults
  • 3.1 Identify materials required to restore paintwork to pre-damage condition from paint manufacturer recommended procedures
  • 3.2 Measure, mix and apply materials using approved equipment
  • 3.3 Rectify and blend damaged paintwork with existing paintwork using COB two-pack system and blending and drying techniques according to workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Complete rectification processes according to workplace procedures
4. Complete work processes
  • 4.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
  • 4.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • 4.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
