This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to plan and coordinate timber drying procedures. It includes managing the kiln and the schedules for drying timber.The unit applies to operators who dry timber in a forest and wood products factory setting.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan drying procedures
  • 1.1 Assess, measure and record moisture content and variations in timber.
  • 1.2 Plan process cycles and develop timber drying schedule.
  • 1.3 Review organisational policies and procedures for drying procedures and kiln management.
2. Control drying operations
  • 2.1 Implement standard operating procedures for the kiln.
  • 2.2 Oversee loading of timber according to quantities scheduled for drying.
  • 2.3 Check and analyse process trends.
  • 2.4 Implement modifications for optimum performance in the drying process.
  • 2.5 Check and control seasoning chambers throughout the drying process.
  • 2.6 Oversee transfer and storage of dried timber.
3. Complete documentation
  • 3.1 Complete operating logs and seasoning records.
  • 3.2 Identify areas for improvement.
  • 3.3 Record and report major problems and equipment faults.
