Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to surface treat raw boards with chemical systems using spray boom equipment to temper wood panel products.The unit applies to production workers who surface treat raw board in a forest and wood products factory setting.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for treating
- 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
- 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
- 1.3 Obtain type and quantity of raw boards for surface treatment from storage.
- 1.4 Select suitable feed rates and chemical products for material being surface treated and plan process in line with work order.
2. Use equipment to surface treat raw boards
- 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
- 2.2 Apply surface treatment, monitor and adjust additive flow rates continually.
- 2.3 Check spray operations continually; clear blockages and filters while maintaining spray coverage.
- 2.4 Check boards regularly for surface quality and contamination; take corrective action where required.
- 2.5 Remove defective boards from treatment process and review for disposal or re-treatment.
- 2.6 Dry material and stack safely in designated location.
3. Shut down and clean equipment
- 3.1 Coordinate shutdown procedures with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.
- 3.2 Turn off pumps and flush equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions.
- 3.3 Dispose of excess chemicals and flushing liquid in line with environmental protection practices.
- 3.4 Store equipment and chemicals in line with organisational procedures.
- 3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
