Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to use jewellery repair techniques in the repair and restoration of antique or traditional jewellery items. It applies to restoration and repair work conducted on antique, traditional or period jewellery where the finish must be consistent with the characteristics of the item and requires the use of jewellery equipment.This unit applies to individuals involved in jewellery manufacture in a small or large-scale production context. They use and adapt technical skills and knowledge to produce work that meets pre-determined design and production requirements.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: AUnit Weight: 4

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Use personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
- 1.4 Identify job requirements from specifications
2. Determine feasibility of work
- 2.1 Identify the era and design characteristics of the jewellery item and the materials and construction techniques used
- 2.2 Conduct research into the item characteristics to inform work
- 2.3 Examine the item to determine condition and extent of work requirements and determine feasibility of completing work to standard required
- 2.4 Determine storage and handling requirements for item to ensure protection from damage
3. Plan repair or restoration work
- 3.1 Determine technical requirements for jewellery item repair or restoration and develop work plan
- 3.2 Estimate costs and confirm viability against client requirements and budget
- 3.3 Determine requirement for manufacture of new componentry or sourcing of specialist expertise
- 3.4 Confirm feasibility of repair work to achieve quality outcome
- 3.5 Source materials, equipment, components and specialist expertise required to complete work
4. Conduct repair and restoration work
- 4.1 Select and use tools, equipment, materials and consumables appropriate to job requirements in accordance with manufacturer specifications and SOPs
- 4.2 Apply repair and restoration techniques to jewellery item in accordance with the style of the item
- 4.3 Identify and address unforeseen consequences of work on the item
- 4.4 Perform work in a manner that minimises waste and complies with environmental requirements
5. Finish work
- 5.1 Ensure work meets client requirements and quality standards and re-work or repair any non-compliance
- 5.2 Determine safe cleaning techniques for antique item to ensure features are protected from damage
- 5.3 Clean item and prepare for presentation to client
- 5.4 Complete documentation on work undertaken in accordance with workplace procedures
- 5.5 Clean and restore work area in accordance with SOPs
