Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct profile planer operations in civil construction.It applies to those working in operational roles. The individual is generally a skilled operator and may provide theoretical advice and support a team. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to conduct profile planer operations
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply profile planer operations documentation and check the work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • 1.5 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks, check for faults, and report or rectify in scope of own role
  • 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Conduct profile planer pre-operational checks
  • 2.1 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
  • 2.2 Check profile planer controls and functions and rectify and report any faults as required within scope of own role
3. Operate profile planer
  • 3.1 Drive or operate profile planer to achieve optimum output by removing material according to site requirements
  • 3.2 Communicate with driver or operator as required and confirm operation meets task requirements
4. Select, remove and fit attachments
  • 4.1 Select attachment for the task
  • 4.2 Remove and fit attachment according to manufacturer specifications and job requirements
  • 4.3 Test attachment is fit for operation
  • 4.4 Use attachment according to job requirements
  • 4.5 Clean and store removed attachments according to workplace procedures
5. Relocate the profile planer
  • 5.1 Prepare profile planer for relocation according to job requirements
  • 5.2 Move profile planer between worksites according to workplace procedures
6. Carry out profile planer operator maintenance
  • 6.1 Park profile planer, prepare for maintenance and shutdown
  • 6.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 6.3 Remove and replace defective parts
  • 6.4 Carry out regular programmed maintenance tasks
7. Clean up
  • 7.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials as required
  • 7.2 Clean, check and store profile planer, tools and equipment and conduct operator maintenance within scope of own role
  • 7.3 Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements
