Description
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to install additional appliances, such as diesel heaters or air conditioning, in a recreational vehicle. The work will be carried out in a recreational vehicle service and repair facility.This unit of competency covers the preparation for, installation of and clean-up after the installation of the appliance.The operator will be required to work to procedures, and follow plans/specifications, insurance requirements and customer needs. This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team/work group and working in liaison with other shift team members.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan the work
  • 1.1 Review the requirements of the work, including insurance requirements and customer needs
  • 1.2 Examine manufacturer’s recommendations for installation of the appliance
  • 1.3 Identify likely problems with the proposed location or nature of the installation
  • 1.4 Negotiate exact details of proposed installation with customer
  • 1.5 Confirm what needs to be done and determine how to do it
  • 1.6 Check required tools and jigs are available at the worksite
  • 1.7 Check required materials and components are available at the worksite
  • 1.8 Identify any hazards and the related hazard controls
  • 1.9 Check that hazard controls are in place and operational
  • 1.10 Query any items that are different to usual and clarify requirements
2 Prepare to install the appliance in accordance with devised procedures
  • 2.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • 2.2 Remove/modify any existing items to make available an appropriate space for the appliance
  • 2.3 Make penetrations in external cladding, interior panelling and frame as required
  • 2.4 Make provision for any ventilation requirements
  • 2.5 Segregate and handle waste in accordance with procedures
  • 2.6 Temporarily store removed items which are to be reused
3 Install the required appliance in accordance with devised procedures
  • 3.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including PPE
  • 3.2 Install required appliance in accordance with the devised procedure and manufacturer’s recommendations
  • 3.3 Ensure appliance is attached as required
  • 3.4 Run and connect any required piping/ducting/cable
  • 3.5 Ensure items function as intended
  • 3.6 Make good any items modified/temporarily removed
4 Seal any external penetrations made in accordance with devised procedures
  • 4.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including PPE
  • 4.2 Apply seals/sealing material in accordance with the devised procedure
  • 4.3 Adjust/trim as required
  • 4.4 Ensure seals are effective
5 Finish appliance installation
  • 5.1 Check installed appliance has been fitted correctly and make any required adjustments
  • 5.2 Clean up recreational vehicle and make ready for hand back to customer
  • 5.3 Clean up work area, leaving it ready for the next job
  • 5.4 Segregate and handle waste in accordance with procedures
  • 5.5 Complete any required documentation/records
