Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply music composition skills and create music that synchronises with sequences in screen productions. The unit applies to those who write music for varied purposes, including to create mood, reinforce genre and historical period, and complement action sequences within tight timelines. Composers work closely with producers, directors, sound recordists and post-production personnel.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to create music for screen production
  • 1.1 Consult with required personnel to clarify screen music composition brief and negotiate an agreement establishing timelines, milestones and outcomes against brief
  • 1.2 Research and document any copyright, royalty and licensing requirements
  • 1.3 Research style and other aspects of music required for content and storyline of screen production as required
  • 1.4 Map musical events and durations using a shot list and consult with director to determine which film shots require theme and incidental music
  • 1.5 Establish a routine with required personnel to view film shots and identify implications for composition
  • 1.6 Brief others involved in composition project as required
  • 1.7 Prepare plan and organise resources for completing work in line with established requirements of brief
  • 1.8 Generate musical ideas and starting points, and test options for realising them
  • 1.9 Investigate potential of basic structural elements for achieving desired effect and refine ideas with required personnel
2. Create and orchestrate music for screen production
  • 2.1 Organise musical elements into working versions of theme and incidental music
  • 2.2 Orchestrate sound and themes suited to context of each sequence and confirm musical continuity through whole soundtrack
  • 2.3 Identify suitable personnel to perform live music for soundtrack as required
  • 2.4 Share work in progress with required personnel and seek feedback on creative and technical aspects of composition
  • 2.5 Incorporate ideas and feedback into final composition
  • 2.6 Collaborate with required personnel in compiling final music soundtrack
3. Evaluate work
  • 3.1 Seek and discuss feedback on composition and soundtrack compilation process with required personnel
  • 3.2 Evaluate music soundtrack in meeting production requirements and planned outcomes
  • 3.3 Provide feedback to team members on their performance as required
  • 3.4 Evaluate own role in operations and note areas for improvement
