Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to organise and monitor waste management operations. It includes scheduling and organising personnel, plant, equipment and materials to meet operational requirements and monitoring activities on site to ensure quality and regulatory compliance. It includes supervising personnel to ensure capacity and licensing is appropriate for the work being performed, identifying training opportunities to address individual skill gaps and ensuring the availability of skilled personnel to meet work schedules.A person who achieves this unit of competency is able to use specialised knowledge to complete routine and non-routine tasks and deal with predictable and sometimes unpredictable problems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for waste management operations.
  • 1.1 Review workplace policies and procedures, legislation and regulations and apply to waste management operations.
  • 1.2 Check required licences to ensure they are appropriate to work being performed according to legislative and workplace requirements.
  • 1.3 Assess and manage hazards and risks associated with waste management operations according to workplace requirements.
  • 1.4 Inform relevant persons of work requirements and safe operating procedures according to workplace requirements.
  • 1.5 Select, check and use required personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities.
2 Organise operational resources.
  • 2.1 Estimate plant, equipment and materials required for waste management operations based on past usage and present needs and confirm associated licensing requirements.
  • 2.2 Check availability of plant, equipment and materials and implement actions required to ensure their readiness to meet operational requirements.
  • 2.3 Organise and supervise personnel required for waste management operations.
3 Schedule and monitor work activities.
  • 3.1 Schedule waste management operations to ensure efficient use of resources and completion within designated timeframes.
  • 3.2 Allocate work to relevant persons according to individual licences, capacities and skills according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
  • 3.3 Monitor work activities to ensure compliance with quality and operational requirements and implement contingency measures to resolve problems.
  • 3.4 Discuss skill gaps with personnel and identify training opportunities to maintain competency levels required to meet operational requirements.
4 Finalise monitoring and complete documentation.
  • 4.1 Monitor processes to complete waste management operations according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
