Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to further develop skills in singing or playing an instrument. It involves preparing for and performing a simple musical sequence or piece.The unit applies to those who have some musical experience and who perform in situations that allow them to extend elementary skills in singing or playing a specific musical instrument.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Care for instrument or voice
  • 1.1 Care for and safely move, use and store instrument and accessories as required, using required methods and cleaning products
  • 1.2 Set up and warm up instrument or voice in preparation for practice and performance
  • 1.3 Tune instrument as required and confirm accuracy of tuning using tuning device or in consultation with required personnel
2. Develop skills in singing or playing an instrument
  • 2.1 Listen to work of professional musicians or singers and identify own skill development goals
  • 2.2 Test scope, capability and sound characteristics of instrument or voice
  • 2.3 Plan activities and physical exercises that increase capacity to perform different notes, rhythms and chord patterns using activities and physical exercises, as guided by a teacher or mentor
  • 2.4 Document personal practice using music terminology according to own skill development goals
  • 2.5 Identify pitch, rhythm, instrumentation and musical style using listening skills
  • 2.6 Listen to own work and develop intonation, harmonies and rhythm in singing or playing music
  • 2.7 Seek feedback from required personnel on practice and skill development
3. Play or sing pieces
  • 3.1 Play or sing piece using a range of basic techniques
  • 3.2 Perform piece following required tempi
  • 3.3 Apply listening skills during performance and adjust performance as required
4. Review performances
  • 4.1 Evaluate own performance and note areas that could be improved
  • 4.2 Seek feedback on own performance from required personnel, and identify strategies to improve
