Description
This unit of competency describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret a prescribed request for a dental radiographic image. It also includes the preparation of the patient for dental radiography and the selection of equipment requirements.This unit applies to dental assisting work under the instruction and supervision of the dental practitioner.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Dental radiography work must only be performed by a person with a radiation user licence granted by the relevant State/Territory regulatory authority under legislation.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Interpret the request for the prescribed dental radiographic image.
  • 1.1. Interpret image request accurately using appropriate dental terminology.
  • 1.2. Determine situations where more information is required and ask the prescribing practitioner for clarification.
  • 1.3. Select and use appropriate exposure variables in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and patient requirements.
2. Assess and determine the procedure prior to exposing a dental radiographic image.
  • 2.1. Confirm patient identity and match to the request.
  • 2.2. Determine the patient’s ability to comply with instructions.
  • 2.3. Review modifications to the standard procedure with the practitioner prior to implementation.
  • 2.4. Explain the procedure and necessary requirements clearly to the patient before commencement.
  • 2.5. Obtain and document consent from the patient or carer.
  • 2.6. Prepare patient prior to producing a dental radiographic image.
3. Select and prepare dental radiographic imaging equipment and accessories.
  • 3.1. Identify patient requirements and select correct dental radiographic imaging equipment for the procedure.
  • 3.2. Select and use correct accessories for dental radiographic imaging.
  • 3.3. Select relevant technical variables of the dental radiographic imaging equipment.
