Description
This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to use processing equipment to recover and reclaim ozone depleting substances (ODS) and synthetic greenhouse gases (SGG), and fill ODS and SGG containers.The unit is suitable for those with basic skills and knowledge undertaking routine work tasks under the direction of more experienced workers.ODS and SGG are gaseous fire-extinguishing agents listed in Schedule 1 of the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989 and by law, can only be handled by people who hold an appropriate extinguishing agent handling licence (EAHL). This unit supports one or more EAHLs prescribed under the Act. For further information, check with the relevant regulatory authority.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for ODS and SGG recovery.
- 1.1 Read work instructions to clarify types and processing requirements of ODS and SGG extinguishing agents and containers.
- 1.2 Plan work activities to prevent ODS and SGG emissions and comply with relevant Australian Standards, regulatory, work health and safety (WHS) and workplace requirements.
- 1.3 Identify potential and actual breaches of rules and regulations associated with work instructions and take required action to ensure compliance according to regulatory and workplace requirements.
- 1.4 Select and use required tools and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE).
- 1.5 Identify and prepare to control hazards in the work area according to workplace requirements.
2 Prepare processing equipment for operation.
- 2.1 Set up processing equipment according to manufacturer requirements.
- 2.2 Pressurise processing equipment and check to ensure line holds pressure.
- 2.3 Perform leak detection test on processing equipment and connections.
- 2.4 Replace or recycle connections, filters and hoses as required before commencing processing.
- 2.5 Check equipment set-up for correct operation and rectify or report defects according to workplace requirements.
3 Recover and reclaim ODS and SGG materials.
- 3.1 Identify types of ODS or SGG containers, valves, labels and transport caps, and select suitable method of recovery according to regulatory and workplace requirements.
- 3.2 Weigh containers and record mass before processing.
- 3.3 Check and confirm container connections to processing equipment.
- 3.4 Operate and monitor processing equipment and complete recovery processing according to manufacturer and workplace requirements.
- 3.5 Perform quality control analysis of recovered material, confirm acceptable results and activate reclamation processing equipment according to manufacturer and workplace requirements.
- 3.6 Monitor equipment operation and complete reclamation processing according to manufacturer and workplace requirements.
- 3.7 Weigh containers and record mass after processing.
4 Prepare container and assemble valve.
- 4.1 Select and gather containers and valve components to suit ODS or SGG extinguishing agent.
- 4.2 Assemble valve components and connect assembled valve to container.
- 4.3 Check containers and labels for fill processing to confirm accuracy.
5 Fill container and complete documentation.
- 5.1 Check and confirm container connection to processing equipment according to manufacturer requirements.
- 5.2 Operate and monitor processing equipment and complete fill process according to manufacturer and workplace requirements.
- 5.3 Weigh container to verify fill processing and record container mass.
- 5.4 Pressurise system container to standard for type of agent and container.
- 5.5 Evacuate transfer equipment lines.
- 5.6 Remove container from processing equipment, test for leaks and rectify or report defects according to regulatory and workplace requirements.
- 5.7 Prepare container for service and pack filled container according to regulatory and workplace requirements.
- 5.8 Complete service documentation detailing recovery, reclaim and fill results according to regulatory and workplace requirements.
