Description
This unit describes the application of the required skills and knowledge to carry out research activities, analyse research data and produce research reports, in conjunction with professional and other personnel, related to the design, development and production of motor vehicles.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine research requirements
- 1.1. Applicable legislative, OHS, and organisation requirements relevant to the produce research reports are verified and complied with throughout the work activity
- 1.2. Instructions and plans are read and interpreted to identify processes and materials to complete work tasks
- 1.3. Research brief or problem is defined in conjunction with the relevant design, engineering, marketing, production or other personnel
- 1.4. Research requirements are documented and validated with relevant personnel
2. Select a research strategy
- 2.1. Suitable research strategies for use in the research project are identified and evaluated, including literature searches, questionnaire surveys, interview surveys, workshops, testing and analysis and computerised searches of information databases
- 2.2. Research plan is processed for approval
3. Conduct research
- 3.1. Research activities are conducted
- 3.2. Collected information is processed and/or summarised in accordance with research strategy
4. Evaluate research outcomes
- 4.1. Research data is analysed either manually or with a computer as required
- 4.2. Research outcomes are structured to answer the questions posed in the research brief or problem
- 4.3. Any specific issues and important additional findings are highlighted and summarised
- 4.4. Research outcomes are discussed with relevant personnel and appropriate adjustments made to findings based on the feedback obtained
5. Document research outcomes
- 5.1. Research outcomes are summarised in appropriate format
- 5.2. Research documentation is stored in hard copy and/or electronic format
- 5.3. Research documentation is distributed to specified personnel

Evidence of the following is essential:
compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice and established safe practices and organisation policies and procedures
working and communicating effectively and positively with others involved in the work
applying, within authority, the requirements of the job or work role which could include:
successfully completing research reports
completing work area housekeeping requirements including the documentation of project activity and process outcomes.
Context of and specific resources for assessment
assessment of the competency should take place in a safe working environment in a passenger motor vehicle manufacturing plant or simulated environment using tools/equipment/machinery required for the production process without undue disruption to the production process
assessment is to occur under standard and authorised work practices, safety requirements and environmental constraints.
Method of assessment
A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:
assessment methods must confirm consistency and accuracy of performance (over time and in a range of organisation relevant contexts) together with application of underpinning knowledge
assessment methods must be by direct observation of tasks and include questioning on underpinning knowledge to ensure its correct interpretation and application
assessment may be applied under project related conditions (real or simulated) and require evidence of process
assessment must confirm a reasonable inference that competency is able not only to be satisfied under the particular circumstance, but is able to be transferred to other circumstances.
