Description
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required by personnel to enter and exit a hovering helicopter, along with equipment where required, during an incident. It includes preparing for hover-exit operations, loading helicopter, preparing to exit from hovering helicopter, exiting from hovering helicopter, entering a hovering helicopter and documenting maintenance of equipment.Hover exit and entry are performed independently or under limited supervision as a single operator or within a team environment. The unit is applicable to personnel involved in the response to an incident such as a fire or flood and who is required to enter and exit a hovering helicopter as part of their duties.The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for hover-exit operations
  • 1.1 Equipment, if required during hover-exit, is prepared for loading
  • 1.2 Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and worn during hover-exit operations
  • 1.3 Checks on personal protective clothing and equipment are undertaken, where required
  • 1.4 Instructions of pilot and/or air crew are followed during helicopter activities including emergencies
2 Load helicopter
  • 2.1 Personnel and equipment, where required, are assembled and weighed with names and weights recorded as instructed by air and/or ground crew
  • 2.2 Pilot and/or air crew is informed of personnel and equipment weight
  • 2.3 Equipment, where required, is loaded into helicopter and secured under pilot and/or air crew supervision
  • 2.4 Personnel board helicopter and are secured with seatbelts or other approved means in accordance with pilot and/or air crew instructions
  • 2.5 Pre-flight safety briefing is obtained from pilot or aircrew
3 Prepare to exit from hovering helicopter
  • 3.1 Following clearance from pilot and/or air crew, instructions are received to prepare for exit
  • 3.2 Seat belt is released prior to moving towards the helicopter doorway in accordance with instructions received from air crew
  • 3.3 Pre-descent checks are conducted
  • 3.4 Clearance is obtained from pilot and/or air crew to disembark
  • 3.5 Emergency procedures are followed, as required
  • 3.6 Emergency commands are responded to in accordance with organisational procedures
4 Exit from hovering helicopter
  • 4.1 Operations are undertaken and conducted in accordance with organisational procedures and Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements
  • 4.2 Slow and controlled movements are taken to minimise uncommanded aircraft reactions to changing and shifting weight
  • 4.3 Individuals and equipment are transferred between helicopter and the ground under instruction from pilot and/or air crew
  • 4.4 Assembly point for individuals and equipment, where required, is identified and reached
  • 4.5 Emergency procedures are followed, as required
  • 4.6 Emergency commands are responded to in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 4.7 All clear signal is communicated to pilot or air crew when landing activity is complete
5 Enter a hovering helicopter
  • 5.1 Individuals and equipment, where required, are located at nominated assembly point in preparation for hover-entry
  • 5.2 Following clearance from pilot and air crew, movement towards helicopter is undertaken in accordance with instructions received
  • 5.3 Under instruction from air crew, individuals and equipment, where required, are transferred between the ground and helicopter
  • 5.4 Slow and controlled movements are taken to minimise uncommanded aircraft reactions to changing and shifting weight
  • 5.5 Seat belt, or other approved means, is secured or connected
  • 5.6 Seat belt remains secured until clearance for release is issued by the pilot and/or aircrew
6 Documentmaintenance ofequipment
  • 6.1 Damage to equipment is reported for maintenance, where required
  • 6.2 Damage to equipment is documented, where required
