Description
This unit covers the capturing of animals for impounding and caring for impounded animals.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Assist in the capture and impounding of animals
- 1.1 Traffic control requirements are actioned according to relevant licensing requirements.
- 1.2 Impounding techniques appropriate to the animal species and condition are recognised and demonstrated.
- 1.3 Stock brands are identified in accordance with council policies and procedures.
2. Monitor and care for animals
- 2.1 Behavioural and general characteristics of animals are recognised and a suitable response is employed before and during handling.
- 2.2 Health and condition of animals are assessed upon capture and during impoundment with the necessary response taken in accordance with council policies and procedures.
- 2.3 Safe work practices, procedures and environmental conditions are observed when handling, monitoring and caring for animals.
3. Assist in the operation and maintenance of pound facilities
- 3.1 Issues of concern with animal housing are identified and reported and animals are rehoused as necessary.
- 3.2 Cleaning and waste disposal duties are carried out in accordance with pound procedures.
- 3.3 Registers and records are updated in accordance with pound procedures.

Overview of assessment requirements
A person who demonstrates competency in this unit will be able to perform the outcomes described in the Elements to the required performance level detailed in the Performance Criteria. The knowledge and skill requirements described in the Range Statement must also be demonstrated. For example, knowledge of the legislative framework and safe work practices that underpin the performance of the unit are also required to be demonstrated.
Critical aspects of evidence to be considered
Impounding techniques used are verified as appropriate to animal species and the condition of the animal.
Assessment of animal health and condition is in accordance with council policies and procedures.
Disposal of animals, where necessary, is verified and in line with council policies and procedures.
Traffic control is in accordance with relevant licensing requirements and generally under workplace supervision.
Use of firearms is in accordance with relevant licensing requirements and generally under workplace supervision.
Context of assessment
On the job or in a simulated work environment.
Method of assessment
The following assessment methods are suggested:
observation of the learner performing a range of workplace tasks over sufficient time to demonstrate handling of a range of contingencies
written and/or oral questioning to assess knowledge and understanding
completion of workplace documentation
third-party reports from experienced practitioners
completion of self-paced learning materials including personal reflection and feedback from trainer, coach or supervisor
Evidence required for demonstration of consistent performance
Evidence will need to be collected across a range of variables over a period of time.
