Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct set elements that are operated through mechanical devices in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that mechanical set pieces meet the creative requirements of productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine requirements for mechanical sets
- 1.1 In consultation with relevant colleagues and with reference to production documentation, confirm requirements for mechanical sets
- 1.2 Discuss construction and safety issues associated with constructing mechanical sets and plan accordingly
- 1.3 Take budgets and other constraints into account when planning work
- 1.4 Reach agreement on scope of own work and construction deadlines
- 1.5 Update construction plans to take account of discussions as required
2. Prepare for construction work
- 2.1 Select equipment and materials based on the way in which mechanical set pieces are to be used
- 2.2 Consider different construction options and use those that will enhance the final outcome
- 2.3 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible
3. Complete construction work
- 3.1 Follow construction plans to create mechanical set pieces, ensuring that safety procedures are followed at all times
- 3.2 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish and suitability for production requirements
- 3.3 Seek feedback on work in progress and adjust construction techniques as required
- 3.4 Test operation of completed set pieces according to organisational requirements
- 3.5 Contribute to evaluations of set construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance
