Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and produce functional or artistic glass objects using kiln casting techniques. It involves research to develop designs and refinement of kiln casting technique through experimentation and dedicated practice.It applies to those visual artists who are highly skilled in the specific techniques for kiln cast glasswork and who realise an individual professional style and a coherent body of creative work. They work with a high level of independence seeking mentoring and guidance as required.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Develop ideas for kiln cast glass
- 1.1 Evaluate creative and professional opportunities offered by kiln cast glasswork for own approach to work
- 1.2 Research ideas for kiln cast glasswork from historical and contemporary references
- 1.3 Research, adapt and use relevant ideas and approaches from other practitioners and comply with intellectual property requirements
- 1.4 Refine ideas and create designs for a range of kiln cast glass objects to meet professional practice needs
2. Establish requirements for kiln cast glass
- 2.1 Investigate specific safety and sustainability issues for kiln cast glasswork to establish, follow and monitor safe work practices during production of work
- 2.2 Set up work space, equipment, tools and materials according to safety requirements
- 2.3 Plan firing schedules for different forms
- 2.4 Investigate and test processes for kiln cast glasswork on samples or practice pieces
3. Kiln cast glass forms
- 3.1 Determine and use suitable forming methods and techniques for a range of objects
- 3.2 Make kiln cast glass objects to design requirements for form and function
- 3.3 Define the form using glassworking techniques
- 3.4 Prepare articles for further surface treatment and finishing
