Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required by performers to extend the combined skills of dance, drama, singing, acting and movement to a professional level in musical theatre. This includes extending musical theatre skills for performances in commercial, cabaret or competition settings, as members of an ensemble or in some solo routines.The unit applies to those who are performers with existing musical theatre skills and who aim to refine their technique to convey mood and music style through complex dance and vocal sequences. While some supervision is provided in practice sessions and rehearsals, performers are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and others during live performances.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Confirm and discuss artistic goals for musical theatre performance
- 1.1 Identify the background and context of performance pieces and clarify intent of performance for intended audience
- 1.2 Discuss aspects of own character role, relationships with other characters and the elements of own scenes with required personnel
2. Rehearse musical theatre performances
- 2.1 Apply principles of characterisation to own character role in practice sessions
- 2.2 Respond promptly to direction
- 2.3 Rehearse songs, dances and scenes until required performance standard is reached
- 2.4 Refine own character interpretation in conjunction with other performers
- 2.5 Develop own voice for character role according to performance requirements
- 2.6 Integrate of required materials for sets, props and costuming into performances
- 2.7 Analyse and adjust performance during rehearsals according to required performance standard
3. Perform musical theatre
- 3.1 Perform warm-up and cool-down procedures in conjunction with performance activities
- 3.2 Apply strategies for overcoming performance anxiety
- 3.3 Integrate elements effectively, creating a convincing character and a strong story-telling performance
- 3.4 Adapt performances to the scale and nature of the venue and audience requirements
- 3.5 Demonstrate concentration and stamina for the duration of performances
- 3.6 Communicate required mood through characterisation, in line with creative objectives
- 3.7 Demonstrate flexible and effective responsiveness to contingencies as required during performances
4. Evaluate musical theatre performances
- 4.1 Assess own technical and artistic development and set creative goals through analysis of performances against previous work
- 4.2 Identify and observe weaknesses and errors in performances and develop performance improvement strategies
- 4.3 Contribute to assessment of audience response to performances
- 4.4 Evaluate own professional work ethic
- 4.5 In consultation with teachers and mentors, develop realistic parameters for extending scope of performance practice
