Elements and Performance Criteria

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Recognised barrier
Where a pit is to be installed over power cables a barrier of an agreed material should be placed under the full area of the pit base in accordance with enterprise requirements or agreements with other authorities
Enclosure
May be: pre-fabricated manhole, pit, conduit/pipe
May be constructed of: concrete, fibreglass, bricks, concrete panels, plastic, tin
Local physical conditions
For the relocation of cabinets, pillars, or conduit include: geological conditions which make digging or boring difficult, recent inundation of site by water or earthworks, aesthetics, plant integrity and safety of staff
Pad beneath underground enclosure
Foundation may be constructed of, sand, gravel or similar suitable material
Barrier (where power cable exists below pit) may be concrete or polymeric strip material
Restoration
May involve: consultation with owner/tenant/authorities, use of other than original materials
Tools used

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.
Overview of assessment
Evidence of the following is essential:
Installation of plant including: pipe/conduit, pits and manholes
Soil types must include at least two types: from sand, rock, soil or combination soil types.
Work practices that ensure all relevant authorities have been notified and approvals obtained prior to commencement.
Shoring an excavation site to meet enterprise and regulatory requirements.
Safe use of any specialised hand or power tools and/or equipment normally used for excavation, pipe/conduit installation and site restoration.
Application of all related OHS requirements and work practices associated with excavation, pipe/conduit installation and/or site restoration (including protective clothing and personal safety items, and adequate warning signs and safety devices are installed).
Ability to read and interpret drawings: site plans, street plans, construction plans, building plans and site layout drawings.
Correct interpretation and application of regulations and standards related to the installation of the above enclosures.
Interpersonal skills related to work associates, supervisors, team members and clients.
Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit
Assessment must ensure:
A workplace conducting the operations covered by this competency unit, equipment and resources relevant to the context of the work (See Range Statement) and support from a competent supervisor or mentor.
OR
A simulated environment with similar provisions which conforms to the Assessment Guidelines.
Context of and specific resources for assessment
Access must be provided to appropriate learning and assessment support when required.
Assessment processes and techniques must be culturally appropriate, and appropriate to the oral communication skill level, and language and literacy capacity of the candidate and the work being performed.
In all cases where practical assessment is used it will be combined with targeted questioning to assess underpinning knowledge.
