Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lay up fabric and cut work as part of the textile production process in situations involving complex patterns, multiple layers, step layers and two-way markers. Fabrics may have directional patterns. Work may be completed using manual or computer-aided techniques. This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined specifications and established procedures using discretion and judgement to manage tasks involving some complexity.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to cut complicated fabrics and lays
  • 1.1 Determine lay-up and cutting requirements from work specifications
  • 1.2 Identify and comply with workplace health and safety requirements
  • 1.3 Prepare equipment and working area in accordance with job requirements
  • 1.4 Obtain fabric and marker and confirm suitability to meet specifications
2. Lay up fabric and position marker
  • 2.1 Lay up fabric, check lay height and position of fabric according to requirements of cutting equipment and work specifications
  • 2.2 Place marker on lay, check marker and lay alignment and take appropriate action according to job specification
3. Cut work
  • 3.1 Safely operate equipment and cut lay to meet specifications
  • 3.2 Inspect cut work, identify any faults and rectify any deficiencies
  • 3.3 Monitor performance of cutting equipment for signs of faulty operation and take required action to rectify performance
4. Complete work
  • 4.1 Complete and store production documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.2 Perform routine maintenance on cutting equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • 4.3 Clean work area and process unused fabric for recycling or safe disposal to minimise waste
