Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes required to match vehicle or component multi-layer and clear over base paint colours using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paint codes. It involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, identifying paint codes, preparing colour matching test cards, mixing and spraying paint and conducting a visual colour match, and completing workplace processes and documentation.It applies to those working in the automotive paint refinishing repair industry.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to colour match multi-layer and clear over base two-pack paints
  • 1.1 Job requirements are determined from workplace instructions
  • 1.2 Colour matching information is accessed and interpreted
  • 1.3 Vehicle paint specifications are identified from workplace instructions and recorded
  • 1.4 Paint colour matching materials are selected and inspected for quality
  • 1.5 Hazards associated with the work are identified and risks are managed
  • 1.6 Paint tools and equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) are selected and checked for serviceability
  • 1.7 Work is planned to identify multi-layer and clear over base colour matching techniques, minimise waste, and prevent damage to vehicle
2. Mix multi-layer clear over base colour
  • 2.1 Paint mixing system is set up and operated according to manufacturer instruction
  • 2.2 Mixing is carried out according to paint manufacturer specifications, approved colour matching method, and safety and environmental requirements, and without causing damage to vehicle or components
3. Prepare colour test card and perform visual matching
  • 3.1 Colour matching test cards are prepared and sprayed to enable a visual comparison between matched and original paint
  • 3.2 Visual matching is carried out, comparisons are made between matched and original paint, and paint codes are recorded
  • 3.3 Painting and matching activities are carried out according to workplace procedures, OEM paint codes, and safety and environmental requirements
  • 3.4 Paint is remixed for further matching prior to application if first mix does not match original paint
4. Complete work processes
  • 4.1 Final inspection is made to ensure work meets workplace expectations and matched paint is presented ready for use
  • 4.2 Work area is cleaned, waste and non-recyclable materials are disposed of, and recyclable material is collected and stored
  • 4.3 Tools and equipment are checked, reported if faulty, and stored according to workplace procedures
  • 4.4 Workplace documentation is processed according to workplace procedures
