Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to coordinate and monitor the movement and distribution of wood chips to, from and over the stockpile, including movement and loading. The work is undertaken in a forest and wood products factory setting. The unit applies to Production Worker, Chipper Operator, Machine Operator. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan stockpile operations
  • 1.1 Review orders, and requirements for wood chip movement.
  • 1.2 Produce stockpile schedules according to site procedures.
  • 1.3 Check wood chip supplies.
2. Control stockpile
  • 2.1 Establish area for stockpile and estimate growth or contraction on basis of production and shipping schedules.
  • 2.2 Review reach of chip slinging equipment.
  • 2.3 Inspect stockpile and identify hazards within vehicle operational area.
3. Coordinate wood chip movement and loading
  • 3.1 Select and allocate vehicles and attachments to spread chips and load transport.
  • 3.2 Advise site of spreading, movement and loading operations.
  • 3.3 Coordinate stockpile levelling in accordance with site procedures.
  • 3.4 Coordinate and direct wood chip retrieval from the stockpile edges to transport.
  • 3.5 Investigate, record and report on wood chip movement and equipment faults in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
