Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to apply grain setting techniques to set gem settings. It applies to pre-manufactured jewellery items and includes application of pave, thread and grain, and single stone bead set techniques.This unit applies to individuals involved in jewellery manufacture in a small or large-scale production context. They use and adapt technical skills and knowledge to produce work that meets pre-determined design and production requirements.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: AUnit Weight: 4

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.4 Identify job requirements from specifications
2. Prepare for grain setting
  • 2.1 Plan grain setting procedure and associated materials and equipment based on job requirements
  • 2.2 Obtain and prepare equipment for the task
  • 2.3 Identify materials to be used and their essential characteristics for impact on the work process
  • 2.4 Handle gems in a manner that ensures damage is prevented
3. Prepare grain setting
  • 3.1 Secure the item to be set in a manner that prevents damage to the jewellery piece during the setting process
  • 3.2 Drill and countersink the item producing a bearing to suit gem diameter
  • 3.3 Seat the gem in the bearing opening, checking the gem is at the correct height, straight and level
  • 3.4 Raise the grains using shaped gravers and bead the grains over to secure the gem
  • 3.5 Form the grains into beads using a beading tool to secure the gem
  • 3.6 Perform the final bright cutting using either a flat or onglette graver
  • 3.7 Conduct work in accordance with environmental considerations
4. Finish work
  • 4.1 Remove any securing compound and clean the jewellery piece for inspection
  • 4.2 Apply techniques for inspection and quality control of the setting work produced through a 10x magnification
  • 4.3 Check jewellery piece against quality and client requirements and rectify any deficiencies
  • 4.4 Complete workplace documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.5 Clean up and maintain production environment and equipment in accordance with SOPs
