Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to operate a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) under emergency conditions in an aquatic facility. It covers skills for completing periodic SCBA checks and minor repairs to ensure the apparatus is readily available when required. It requires the ability to respond to chlorine gas emergencies.This unit applies to public aquatic facilities where chlorine gas is used. It applies to senior technical and operational staff who work independently or with limited guidance from others, taking responsibility for their own work functions and outputs.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.The Western Australian Code of Practice for the Design, Construction, Operation, Management and Maintenance of Aquatic Facilities requires technical operators working in Group 1 aquatic facilities to be certified in this unit of competency.No other occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Maintain self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • 1.1. Interpret manufacturer guidelines to determine repair and maintenance requirements for self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • 1.2. Complete periodic safety and serviceability checks on apparatus according to manufacturer instructions.
  • 1.3. Complete leak detection and withdrawal warning alarm tests according to manufacturer instructions.
  • 1.4. Complete minor repairs to faulty equipment and replace defective parts according to manufacturer instructions.
  • 1.5. Complete repair and maintenance records according to organisational procedures.
2. Use self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • 2.1. Identify emergencies requiring use of self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • 2.2. Assemble component parts of apparatus and promptly complete operational checks.
  • 2.3. Fit and adjust apparatus to ensure comfort and safety.
  • 2.4. Operate apparatus during emergency incidents according to manufacturer instructions and organisational work health and safety (WHS) procedures.
  • 2.5. Monitor air supply by checking gauges regularly throughout emergency activities.
3. Respond to chlorine gas emergency.
  • 3.1. Communicate initial assessment of emergency to appropriate personnel and determine required response.
  • 3.2. Isolate chlorine gas equipment and notify emergency personnel according to organisational emergency response procedures.
4. Maintain and store self-contained breathing apparatus after use.
  • 4.1. Dismantle apparatus and clean all components according to manufacturer instructions to maintain serviceable condition and prolonged lifespan.
  • 4.2. Store apparatus to allow efficient access for next use.
  • 4.3. Tag, isolate and report faulty apparatus according to organisational procedures.
5. Debrief and complete reports.
  • 5.1. Participate in incident management debrief and identify future response improvements.
  • 5.2. Complete required incident reports according to organisational procedures.
