Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for implementation of Moral Injury Pastoral Narrative Disclosure (PND) with members and their families who may have Moral Injury (MI). This unit applies to Chaplaincy in Defence, although it would also apply to others who work in this field, including emergency first responders. This includes theology of multi-faith or other belief systems. The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Those undertaking this unit would work independently and perform complex tasks in a complex environment.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1 Utilise the Moral Injury screening tool

1.1 Administer the Moral Injury screening tool
1.2 Interpret the results of the Moral Injury screening tool

2 Develop trust, rapport and maintain confidentiality

2.1 Establish trust with the member and their family
2.2 Develop strategies for enhancing Rapport with the member and their family
2.3 Maintain confidentiality in accordance with organisational policies and procedures

3 Apply the theological and human science perspectives in relation to PND

3.1 Identify the five themes and symptoms that can cause members to suffer Moral Injury
3.2 Prepare a member for Reflection on their narrative to assist recall of a potentially moral injurious event
3.3 Guide a member through in-depth critical self-Review of their narrative to assist a member to lament
3.4 Support a member to achieve Reconstruction through meaning-making in relation to Moral Injury
3.5 Prepare for the Restoration process in rebuilding the member's belief system of justice and trust
3.6 Prepare a member for the Ritual process to assist with transformation and rehabilitation
3.7 Encourage Renewal to permit a sense of daring and to make lifestyle changes
3.8 Encourage re-establishment of relationships with others and communities for Reconnection and Referral to assist a member's healing and recovery from Moral Injury

4 Provide referrals for Moral Injury support

4.1 Identify and prioritise the symptoms and signs displayed by a member which may result in a referral to a health care practitioner(s)
4.2 Collaborate with health care practitioner(s) to help them identify symptoms and signs which may cause them to refer a member to a Chaplain to address their potential Moral Injury
4.3 Identify additional support services available
4.4 Obtain and record consent from a member and their family before referral to a support service in accordance with organisational procedures
4.5 Make referrals that address the needs of the member and their family according to organisational policies and procedures
4.6 Obtain feedback from the member and their family on how the PND process assisted them
