Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to secure cargo in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to secure cargo/containers
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply load handling compliance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements and prepare work area
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
  • 1.5 Report unsafe work practices and/or equipment to appropriate personnel
  • 1.6 Select and wear/use correct personal protective equipment
  • 1.7 Erect formwork where no lashing points exist
  • 1.8 Read and interpret lashing plan
2. Lash and unlash cargo
  • 2.1 Conduct work paying attention to special requirements of the cargo
  • 2.2 Identify lashing points and use appropriate fittings, lashing equipment and securing equipment for each lashing point
  • 2.3 Lash and secure cargo to lashing points ensuring the correct spread of lashings and that lashings are secured, attached and tensioned
  • 2.4 Securely fasten tensioners
  • 2.5 When unlashing, release, disconnect and remove fittings from the cargo
  • 2.6 Place lashing equipment in designated storage areas or clear from work area
  • 2.7 Ensure lashing/unlashing operations cause no injury to personnel or damage to machinery or cargo
3. Protect cargo from weather
  • 3.1 Cover/uncover cargo using appropriate covering and lashing
  • 3.2 Ensure no injury to personnel or damage to cargo or equipment
4. Pack and unpack cargo
  • 4.1 Identify and report damaged cargo
  • 4.2 Check cargo identification using audit/identification procedure
  • 4.3 Sort and stack cargo prior to packing or after unpacking ensuring the stack is in the correct location, in accordance with relevant Australian standards, safety codes and site operating procedures
  • 4.4 Handle cargo ensuring no injury to personnel or damage to cargo or equipment
  • 4.5 Pack cargo safely and efficiently
  • 4.6 Maintain tight stow of cargo
  • 4.7 Unpack cargo safely and efficiently
