This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create and integrate a website into an open-source content management system.The unit applies to individuals working as web developers, who apply a wide range of knowledge and skills across ICT, to support small to medium enterprises (SMEs) requiring broader rather than more specialised, ICT support.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Analyse specifications and requirements
  • 1.1 Identify required functionality of website
  • 1.2 Determine server-side language required in website production
  • 1.3 Establish content structure and navigation of website
  • 1.4 Identify pre-existing restraints and standards requiring consideration when developing a website solution
2. Research solutions and create a content management system powered website
  • 2.1 Research solutions according to website requirements, including programming language, content management system (CMS), licensing structure and hosting structure
  • 2.2 Select content management system according to research conducted and website requirements
  • 2.3 Fulfil website requirements using plug-ins and additions to existing content management system
  • 2.4 Install and configure chosen CMS and required plugins
  • 2.5 Insert and manage, website content
  • 2.6 Back up CMS as required
3. Validate and evaluate final website
  • 3.1 Validate final website markup against website standards
  • 3.2 Test content management system performance in different browsers and digital devices, checking compatibility and core content management system functionality
  • 3.3 Confirm final website is secure and bug free according to cyber security procedures and protocols
  • 3.4 Confirm website requirements have been met and obtain sign off from required personnel
