Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse and select the fit model used to present sample garments and develop garment fit and size standard. It applies to representations that are required in the design, manufacture and retail of garments to ensure that the targeted customer population is addressed in size range and appropriate data is obtained from research. This data also provides a solid basis for design, pattern development and garment construction for a sizing system.This unit applies to patternmakers and designers.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan to analyse fit model
  • 1.1 Establish intended purpose of and market for design from work information
  • 1.2 Interpret design brief and select sizing system and fit model to represent target population
  • 1.3 Identify need for communication with others involved in the fit process and liaise accordingly
2. Measure fit model
  • 2.1 Establish and mark body reference points using required tools and equipment
  • 2.2 Take and record accurate body measurements
  • 2.3 Analyse measurements for fit implications and discuss with design development team
  • 2.4 Assess body characteristics and compare to standard body definition used by the workplace
  • 2.5 Identify unique features, assess for potential problems in fit and record all information
3. Finalise and check fit model
  • 3.1 Identify types of dress forms or 3D avatars available to designers and technicians and evaluate options according to resources
  • 3.2 Compare to fit model and select appropriate representation for use in product development
