Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, collect and complete venous blood specimens from children from 0 to 5 years. This unit applies to experienced individuals working in a phlebotomist role. They may work in collection centres, hospitals or other health care environments. This unit relates to venous blood collections from children under 5 years. It does not include venous arterial blood collections or blood collections made via artificial access devices such as central lines, peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines, or intra venous (IV) catheter. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with current Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to collect venous blood from children
- 1.1 Organise space and resources to support children, family or carer in accordance with workplace staffing requirements
- 1.2 Greet children, family or carer courteously and identify self
- 1.3 Interpret request form in client record and gather equipment
- 1.4 Explain procedure and obtain consent for collection from parent or carer
- 1.5 Determine volumes of blood required according to organisation policies and procedures
2. Collect venous blood from children
- 2.1 Position children to ensure comfort and safety of child, parent or carer and self
- 2.2 Confirm vein suitable for venous blood collection
- 2.3 Advise parent or carer of intended collection site
- 2.4 Collect venous blood from children according to infection control and organisation policies and procedures
- 2.5 Assess risk-of-harm and confirm continuation of procedure
- 2.6 Select and use supportive holding techniques to comfort distressed children
- 2.7 Invert venous blood collection tubes according to organisation policies and procedures
3. Complete post venous blood collection procedures
- 3.1 Dispose of waste in accordance with waste management and infection control requirements
- 3.2 Label blood collection tubes and confirm label information accuracy with parent or carer
- 3.3 Prepare venous blood collection tubes for transport or storeaccording to request form and organisational procedures
- 3.4 Record and report risk-of-harm concerns according to organisational procedures
- 3.5 Complete post venous collection documentation and manage records according to organisational procedures
