Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply, colour and remove prosthetics for productions in the screen and entertainment industries. It requires developed technical skills in prosthetic design and preparation, and prosthetic maintenance and removal.The unit applies to those who apply three-dimensional prosthetics appliances to performers for the creation of characters, such as ageing, look-alike, casualty and fantasy effects. Individuals must possess sophisticated interpersonal skills due to the lengthy application process of prosthetics and the extensive interaction with performers. The work can be done alone or with others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to apply prosthetics
  • 1.1 Analyse production documentation and determine production requirements and schedules
  • 1.2 Check prosthetic application products are available according to production and budget requirements
  • 1.3 Source reference materials and documentation according to production requirements
  • 1.4 Identify factors that may affect application of prosthetics
  • 1.5 Identify type and condition of performer skin and any special performer requirements
  • 1.6 Test special make-up products according to production requirements
  • 1.7 Explain the process of applying prosthetics to performer and respond to questions as required
2. Develop and document prosthetic designs
  • 2.1 Discuss initial prosthetic design concepts with required personnel
  • 2.2 Evaluate initial prosthetic concepts and select ideas that meet production requirements
  • 2.3 Develop prosthetic designs that meet production requirements
  • 2.4 Discuss additions or changes to production requirements with required personnel and incorporate into prosthetic application designs as required
  • 2.5 Ensure consistent interpretation of character and style according to production requirements
  • 2.6 Prepare make-up plans with details of costings and required resources according to production requirements
  • 2.7 Distribute copies of make-up plans to required personnel
3. Apply and maintain prosthetics
  • 3.1 Determine positioning of prosthetics on performer according to production requirements
  • 3.2 Apply prosthetics using materials, equipment and techniques that meet production requirements
  • 3.3 Apply colour to prosthetics using products, equipment and techniques that meet production requirements
  • 3.4 Evaluate application of prosthetics according to production requirements and adjust as required
  • 3.5 Confirm personnel, products and equipment available for prosthetic maintenance according to production requirements
  • 3.6 Maintain prosthetics according to production requirements and adjust as required
4. Remove prosthetic applications
  • 4.1 Advise performer of prosthetic removal process according to production requirements
  • 4.2 Remove prosthetic applications according to production requirements
  • 4.3 Identify skin irritation or other problems and seek medical advice according to production requirements as required
  • 4.4 Clean equipment and check work area is left in original or improved condition
  • 4.5 Complete workplace documentation as required
