Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to handle animals safely and humanely, prior to slaughter.This unit applies to individuals who work in a meat processing environment and who undertake ante-mortem inspection, or assist with undertaking ante-mortem inspection. Such inspection may take place in a slaughtering establishment or stockyard or lairage.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, animal welfare and meat safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify animal for processing
- 1.1 Identify common breeds of animal processed at workplace
- 1.2 Identify normal behavioural characteristics of relevant species
2. Identify animal welfare requirements for stock handling and lairage facilities
- 2.1 Identify animal welfare regulatory requirements
- 2.2 Identify workplace health and safety and regulatory requirements for lairage
- 2.3 Identify health and safety hazards, and assess and control their risk
- 2.4 Check facilities and equipment and confirm readiness for use
3. Handle animals to achieve outcome required
- 3.1 Handle animals humanely to prevent injury, minimise stress and maintain the quality of meat and hides or skins
- 3.2 Move and sort animals for ante-mortem inspection according to workplace and regulatory standards
- 3.3 Communicate effectively with team members while handling animals
4. Handle contingencies
- 4.1 Identify and handle suspected sick or injured stock according to workplace and regulatory requirements
- 4.2 Treat affected animals according to regulatory, workplace and health and safety requirements, under guidance from veterinarian as required
- 4.3 Handle wild or uncooperative animals humanely without disturbing or injuring other animals or people
- 4.4 Follow emergency procedures for the emergency slaughter of animals as required
