This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to suppress dust in open-cut environment in Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for dust suppression
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply dust suppression documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Access, interpret and select appropriate dust suppression procedure for the work activity and site conditions
  • 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.7 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park up, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
2. Apply dust suppressant
  • 2.1 Distribute dust suppressant in appropriate pattern for ground conditions
  • 2.2 Adjust dust suppression activities to the application schedule and weather conditions
  • 2.3 Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
3. Minimise dust creation
  • 3.1 Select and apply appropriate dust suppression method, ensure dust creation is minimised
  • 3.2 Apply rehabilitation measures to stabilise dumps and tailings sites
  • 3.3 Complete written records and reports
