Description
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge to operate an airborne intelligence system such as advanced aerial mapping systems, camera and/or infrared equipment in order to collect spatial data in relation to fires, floods or other incidents. It includes preparing airborne intelligence system for data collection mission, operating airborne intelligence system and servicing, maintaining and storing the airborne intelligence system.Airborne intelligence systems may be mounted on fixed wing aircraft, rotary wing aircraft or remotely piloted aircraft. The equipment can be operated from within an aircraft or from the ground. The unit is applicable to personnel operating an airborne intelligence system in order to collect spatial data about a fire, flood or other incident. Authorisation to perform this role is subject to organisational policies and procedures.The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or agencies that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare airborne intelligence system for data collection mission
  • 1.1 Requirements for airborne data collection mission including location, data type and format, timing and method of transmission are confirmed with task supervisor
  • 1.2 Airborne intelligence system is prepared in aircraft in accordance with organisational procedures and aircraft operator and pilot requirements
  • 1.3 Airborne intelligence system is inspected, tested and adjusted, as required, to ensure correct operation
  • 1.4 Pilot is briefed on airborne intelligence mission and flight requirements
2 Operate airborne intelligence system
  • 2.1 Communication is maintained with pilot to ensure aircraft flies over areas specified for data collection
  • 2.2 Airborne intelligence system is operated in accordance with organisational procedures and manufacturers' specifications
  • 2.3 Data collection and analysis techniques for mission are determined and implemented
  • 2.4 Digital image techniques and data formats are applied in accordance with mission requirements
  • 2.5 Data is communicated to incident management in accordance with mission requirements
3 Service, maintain and store airborne intelligence system
  • 3.1 Airborne intelligence system is stored and/or removed from aircraft in accordance with organisational procedures and aircraft operator and pilot requirements
  • 3.2 Airborne intelligence system is maintained
  • 3.3 Airborne intelligence system faults are documented and forwarded to approved personnel for action
