This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to supervise canal construction in civil construction, including preparing team members to implement the job plan and overseeing and reporting on canal construction task execution.It applies to those working in supervisory roles. They generally perform a broad range of operational activities in their area of responsibility and are responsible for monitoring a safe work environment. Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. 1. Plan and prepare for applying the principles of canal construction
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to supervise canal construction and confirm work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
  • 1.5 Assess construction tasks and required principles to achieve objectives according to job requirements
  • 1.6 Prepare an implementation action plan in consultation with team members
2. Prepare team members to execute tasks
  • 2.1 Confirm required resources are available to meet job requirements
  • 2.2 Communicate instructions to team members and other involved personnel according to job requirements
  • 2.3 Set out tasks required to complete work activity according to job requirements
3. Oversee execution of canal construction tasks
  • 3.1 Implement the action plan in consultation with team members
  • 3.2 Monitor implementation of the action plan according to job requirements
  • 3.3 Initiate adjustments to work practice and job plans as required to meet job requirements
  • 3.4 Confirm plant, equipment and tools maintenance requirements are carried out and recorded according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
4. Report on the execution of canal construction tasks
  • 4.1 Complete and submit reports according to site requirements
  • 4.2 Review action plan, construction principles and resources used
  • 4.3 Identify training needs of team members and prepare training plans
  • 4.4 Submit recommendations to improve the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of the execution of canal construction tasks
